about

In recent years, massive wildfires have raged across the planet with devastating effects on communities and wildlife. In 2017, our town was surrounded by fire. We were among 60,000 residents in the Cariboo who were forced to flee the flames. None of us will ever forget it. At the start of every summer, we hope and pray and watch the skies for lightning and smoke.

lyrics

WILDFIRES

As the summer turns, the forest burns
It's the end of a hot July
And the beetle kill on a thousand hills
Sends flames that lick the sky.

A hungry beast, the winds prowl east
Taking everything in their path.
And smother the towns near the burning grounds
With sulfurous stench and ash.

Chorus:
So pray for rain, heavy rains!
Then pray for rain some more.
To douse the flames and clear the air
And soak the forest floor.

Spread far and wide you can not hide
As the summer sky turns to gray.
And you cough and choke in the gathering smoke
And hope it's from far away.

But you never know when the hot winds blow
And the sun has turned blood red
If the distant ills will crest the hills
And come stalking you instead.

Chorus:
So pray for rain, heavy rains!
Then pray for rain some more.
To douse the flames and clear the air
And soak the forest floor.
For if it don't rain, heavy rain, we just might lose it all
In the towering flames and the searing heat
When wildfires come to call.

Now, the people fear it could happen hear
For the woods are tinder dry
A lightning strike in the dead of night,
Could raze it all sky high.

So cut and clear, any brush that's near.
Pack your memories safe and sound.
Put important docs in a fireproof box
And prepare to flee this ground.
