abilenejunction I became a nerd of the Klondike in about the fifth grade, reading every book I could find about the gold rush. In the summer of 2010, recently released from the psych ward, I drove up to Dawson City from Edmonton. It was an incredible trip. When I saw an album titled "Chilkoot" I was excited, and not disappointed at all. Now, I'm craving a return to the Yukon. Favorite track: Coyote Moon.

Wildfires 03:54
WILDFIRES As the summer turns, the forest burns It's the end of a hot July And the beetle kill on a thousand hills Sends flames that lick the sky. A hungry beast, the winds prowl east Taking everything in their path. And smother the towns near the burning grounds With sulfurous stench and ash. Chorus: So pray for rain, heavy rains! Then pray for rain some more. To douse the flames and clear the air And soak the forest floor. Spread far and wide you can not hide As the summer sky turns to gray. And you cough and choke in the gathering smoke And hope it's from far away. But you never know when the hot winds blow And the sun has turned blood red If the distant ills will crest the hills And come stalking you instead. Chorus: So pray for rain, heavy rains! Then pray for rain some more. To douse the flames and clear the air And soak the forest floor. For if it don't rain, heavy rain, we just might lose it all In the towering flames and the searing heat When wildfires come to call. Now, the people fear it could happen hear For the woods are tinder dry A lightning strike in the dead of night, Could raze it all sky high. So cut and clear, any brush that's near. Pack your memories safe and sound. Put important docs in a fireproof box And prepare to flee this ground.

Chilkoot 03:25
Chilkoot These trails whisper tales, if you're willing to hear. Memories of journeys laid down through the years. Of daring adventures and gambles hard lost. Of commerce and fortunes that came at a cost. Chilkoot Though the trail's overgrown, abandoned and still, Footfalls still echo out here in the hills. Who were these souls who lusted for gold? And died on the Chilkoot alone in the cold. To be buried by strangers who found where they lay In the grass by the trail, when the snows melt away. Marked by a cross and a pile of stones. So far from their loved ones. So far from their homes. Chilkoot Where's my journal? Got to mark it down. Gonna die right here on this ground. Tell my wife, if it’s ever found, This fool should have turned around. Chilkoot Now, the gold towns have crumbled to ashes and dust. The claims have run out and the tools turned to rust. But the trail lingers on as a witness through time Of fool hardy courage out here in the pines. Chilkoot

Coyote Moon 03:00
COYOTE MOON CHORUS It's a coyote moon tonight. Can you feel your spirit howl at the light? Sway in the rays to your true love's delight. It's a coyote moon on this Cariboo night. Let’s lie on the dock, and gaze at the sky. The stars are so bright they shine in your eyes. We'll kiss long and slow to the calling of the loon, On this Cariboo night, with its coyote moon. You grab the lawn chairs, and I'll set a fire. Come sit close beside me, and dream for a while. Were sizzlin' like August, but it's still only June. Just two helpless souls, to this coyote moon. Here in the glow, the years melt away. You're more beautiful now, than you were yesterday. We're a couple of kids, just caught in a swoon. A trick of the light, in the coyote moon. CHORUS It's a coyote moon tonight. Can you feel your spirit howl at the light? Sway in the rays to your true loves delight It's a coyote moon, on this Cariboo night. So howl it up boys, make lots of noise! The moon is so bright on this coyote night.

Why Can't I Sleep? It comes without warning, the cold light of morning, When the world is silent and gray. Outside on the lawn, and in the forest beyond, The light drives the darkness away. I'm glued to my chair, I got the TV on The late late show has come and gone Infomercials they drone on and on. Why can't I sleep when you're gone? Why can't I sleep when you're gone? Why can't I sleep when you're gone! CHORUS I haven’t slept since you left me. It doesn't feel right. I hear the clock tick on for hours. It echoes thru the silence of the night I miss you dear, when you're not here. Nights are so empty and long. It's all too true, that I'm missing you. I just can't I sleep when you're gone! Why can't I sleep when you're gone? Why can't I sleep when you're gone! CHORUS I haven’t slept since you left me. It doesn't feel right. I hear the clock tick on for hours. It echoes thru the silence of the night So I burn some toast, brew an extra dark roast. And stare at the dust on the floor. And face the facts that until you're back I just won't sleep any more. Why can't I sleep when you're gone? Why can't I sleep when you're gone! Why can't I sleep when you're gone?

Willowdale 04:19
Willowdale On summer nights, when the moon's just right, And the coyotes wail Buckboards ride the road to Willowdale In the aspen forest, where the old roads meet Lie scattered logs in rotting heaps Near a hearth of stone where the chimney stood There’s a weathered brand on a plank of wood. The barn's still there, though the roof’s caved in The barnyard littered with sheets of tin. And a horseshoe swings upside down Its luck spilled out on the cold hard ground. But on summer nights, when the moon's just right, And the coyotes wail Buckboards ride the road to Willowdale Now, there’s no one there, but an old black bear That paws the ground and sniffs the air As the ruffed grouse drums to call its mate The weeds grow tall around the garden gate. Though the trails still meet near the old barn door No one calls here anymore The bridge washed out years before The homesteads gone since the great world war.

BRILLIANT NIGHT It’s a brilliant night with the snow so white And the stars are diamonds in the sky While the falling snow glitters moonlight gold It's a country Christmas here with you. It’s a brilliant night in this Northern light Ice crystals sparkle in the air It's Christmas Eve here beneath the trees On a country Christmas, dear, with you CHORUS: Firelight dances with the shadows There's magic on this night of nights. Alone with you in the forest There's peace on earth tonight It's a brilliant night. The cabin’s all alight There are snow flakes on the window sill Come and warm with me beside the Christmas tree Share this country Christmas, me and you. CHORUS: Firelight dances with the shadows There's magic on this night of nights. Alone with you in the forest There's peace on earth tonight. It’s a brilliant night, with the snow so white And the stars are diamonds in the sky While the falling snow glitters moonlight gold It's a country Christmas here with you. CHORUS: Firelight dances with the shadows There's magic on this night of nights. Alone with you in the forest There's peace on earth tonight.

Sparrows 05:14
SPARROWS I love to hear the sparrows sing, at the dawning of the day, In the lilac bush outside our room, where the fragrant blossoms sway. The cooling breeze that sweeps in all the freshness of the dew, Caresses every waking thought, together here with you. I feel you breathe so gently now, and the softness of your skin. The room awash with golden light as the morning filters in. Rainbows dance above us, from the angel on the glass. Her crystal orb refracting sun rays as they pass. And the sparrows sing their song of joy at the coming of the dawn. The little guys with the great big hearts serenade the lawn. As flowers turn towards the rising sun I love to turn to you. 'Cause my heart sings a sparrow song lying next to you. I love to hear the sparrows sing at the dawning of the day, In the lilac bush outside our room, where the fragrant blossoms sway. The cooling breeze that sweeps in all the freshness of the dew, Caresses every waking thought together here with you. Together. Together, here with you.

about

Chilkoot is an album of my favourite songs, re-imagined and re-mixed, with new arrangements, added instrumentation, and a totally new sound. I hope you enjoy them.

Much love to my beautiful wife Deb for her boundless encouragement and patience. Sparrows is for you, my dear. ❤
